Roberto Montoya-Mejia
The Night of Atahualpa's Despair
1998
mixed media on canvas
36" x 48"
After the Spanish captured Atahualpa, the last emperor of the Incas, they told his people that if they filled a room with gold, he would be returned to them. In this work, Roberto has used the room in which Atahualpa was imprisoned as the room of gold, and the gold is crying tears of blood now that the emperor has been assassinated.
